Assembler Utility
The assembler utility (Assembler.exe) is provided for use in conjunction with the Split File tool. You can find a copy of the assembler in the folder where ShellToys XP was installed. When you split a file, a checkbox option lets you copy the assembler to the output folder along with the split file-parts. If you are distributing the file parts to someone who doesn't have ShellToys XP, make sure you include the assembler with the file parts.

The assembler displays simple instructions when the user clicks its Help button or presses F1. Here, in brief, are usage instructions:

  1. Start the assembler utility (Assembler.exe).

  2. Click the Browse button to find and select the first file in the series of split files. This is the file with a .001 extension. (If the assembler is in the same folder as the file parts, it will find and select this file automatically on startup.)

  3. Click Assemble. The assembler will rebuild all the file parts into a single file with the same name as the original (i.e. the name of the file parts minus their numeric extensions) in the same folder as the file parts. If a file with this name already exists in that folder, the user is given a choice of replacing it or canceling the operation.

  4. Close the assembler. Always check the reassembled file before deleting the file parts. The assembler can be deleted or can be kept for future use.

Notes:

  • For reassembly to work, all the file parts must be in a single directory. If a single file is missing (or any of the files have been renamed) the resulting file will be incomplete and is unlikely to be usable.

  • The Assembler utility is freeware, provided under license. Click the License button in the Assembler to read the license agreement. Using the Assembler to reassemble a file constitutes acceptance of the terms of its license agreement.
